Cycling
Cycling around Monash
Most of our campuses are surrounded by major roads - many of which are hostile environments for cyclists. So how do so many cyclists get to Uni everyday? Check out TravelSmart Maps of suggested cycle routes (available from Bicycle Victoria) which may help you stay in one piece and actually enjoy your ride. Also, we encourage cyclists (especially those coming from further away) to seek advice from ourselves or other cyclists via our cyclists email.
James Gormley Bike Arrival Station
The James Gormley Bike Arrival Station Clayton, is open and available for use by Monash staff and students. The station is a jointly funded project between Monash and the State Government and provides a range of amenities for cyclists such as change rooms, showers and security. McBUG - Monash Clayton Bicycle Users Group
It might not be obvious, but there is a large community of student and staff cyclists on campus. Some of them set up Monash Clayton's Bicycle Users Group (McBUG), which aims to help link all cycling related activities on campus and off - from advocacy to bike-maintenance, commuting to mountain-bike riding, from events at Clayton all the way Round the Bay! If you've got something to input into the group or just want to be kept in the loop, email mcbug@adm.monash.edu.au.
Bikes on trains
Bikes can be carried on all Connex metropolitan services. The combination of bike and train can make your destination accessible from almost anywhere. Compared to a drive during peak hour and the time taken finding a park and walking to your building at Monash, the bike-train combination can be much more efficient. Factor in the health and financial benefits of bike-train versus fuel and parking for your car and you can realise how the benefits just keep adding up.
Where to leave your bike
Inverted-U rails are available at locations around your campus. Monash recommends that you use a bike lock as a deterrent to theft.
Bikery @ MSA Clayton
The Bikery is a volunteer-run bike shop that sells parts and accessories, as well as performing small repairs and giving advise on DIY projects. Located in Building 51 (entry off Union Loop Road), the Bikery is the bike hub of the Clayton campus and provides students and staff with cheap maintenance, bicycle parts and accessories. A range of products including lights, locks, helmets, reconditioned bikes and panniers are available at great prices, and even cheaper for members. You can also great advice on cycling. New Bike Share Program at Monash
More than 70 distinctive green coloured bikes have been made available thanks to industrial design students from the Faculty of Art and Design
The students spent several months creating the bikes by using parts from old and discarded cycles. Students in the scheme are provided with a special key which enables them to ride bikes from a holding area at the halls of residence to various docking stations around the campus.
The scheme has been designed as a test for a more ambitious scheme which will involve the production of an environmentally friendly prototype designed by industrial design students.
The 'Uni-cycle' prototype was built from recycled plastic and has been designed with innovative features including a gas lift seat, photosensitive lights and a drive shaft instead of the traditional oily chain.
It could be on the road within the next two years thanks to money being provided by tOES
The industrial design students from the Art and Design Faculty at the university's Caulfield campus have also come up with prototypes for a vandal proof docking station, tubular steel shelters and a state-of-the-art helmet.
