Rideshare (Carpooling)

The Monash Rideshare (Carpooling) system is a great way for people to come together and save money, make friends, relieve stress, and of course reduce pollution and carbon emissions.

Who Can Register?

Any Staff or Student enrolled and/or employed at Monash University.

What exactly is Monash Rideshare/Carpooling?

Monash Rideshare (Carpooling)  is Monash University’s carpooling program, which aims to reduce the number of single occupant vehicles travelling to the university and is an important part of Monash’s sustainable transport plan.

Rideshare (also known as carpooling, car sharing, lift sharing and covoiturage) is the process of sharing the use of a car with one or more other people to travel to a given destination. There are no strict rules in ridesharing, two or more people can travel together from the same area or pick up people along the way. There can be a set driver, or the driver can rotate as can the vehicle itself.

The benefits of sharing a lift with others to university are many – not only are you actively reducing greenhouse emissions, reducing the amount of traffic on our roads and parking congestion on campus, but you will also be saving money, meeting new people and even freeing up time to finish (or start) that tutorial reading you had forgotten you had.   By carpooling to the University, you may get free carparking, depending on the daily availability.

When can I register and use my permit?

Registration and collection of carpooling permits is available from Friday 8th February 2013 at 9.00am  Permits must be displayed on the dashboard of the vehicle from Monday, 25th February 2013.

Where can I park?

Each Monash campus has its own designated Rideshare/Carpooling permit zones. These zones have been created exclusively for Rideshare (Carpooling)  participants and are patrolled regularly by the campus traffic and security staff.  The following Campus Maps identify the Rideshare (Carpooling)  parking zones;

How do I register for a permit?

You will first need to register for a Rideshare (carpooling) permit. Once you have registered, you will be directed to the Monash Rideshare (Carpooling) Matching Service.  The Monash Rideshare (Carpooling)  Matching Service allows you to find other carpoolers in your area.

Why should I register for a permit and join the matching service?

By registering and participating in Monash Rideshare (Carpooling) you will not only be actively reducing greenhouse gas emissions but you will also have the opportunity to meet other Monash staff and students, all while saving money.

Don’t forget you also get to park on campus for free in the designated Rideshare (Carpooling) zones.

So what’s different in Ridesharing (Carpooling) at Monash in 2012?

NB: The overall number of spaces will remain the same, with the possibility of the C11 area having the capacity to expand with demand.

New Access System into Rideshare/Carpooling Parking Zones

Over the first few weeks of first semester new boom gates will be installed to the entry of the C11 and N1 car park rideshare (carpooling) areas to control access to permit holders only.  Students and staff will be required to use their ID card to swipe into the carpooling parking areas in addition to displaying the two carpooling permits on the dash of the vehicle.
